Administrative Assistants

Administrative assistants work in virtually everyone of the hundreds of offices around campus. Over 90% of the positions in this field are at the administrative assistant level. For advanced positions, candidates must have more developed organizational, administrative, word processing and office skills, in addition to advanced levels of education and related experience.

Research & ResearchSupport

The abundant research conducted at Yale in science, medicine and the social sciences provides several hundred openings in the research and research support job families each year. Positions include laboratory and research assistants, health and safety technicians, research and development technicians and animal technicians. Those with little work experience and a high school education may qualify for a limited number of entry-level positions. Higher level research assistants and technicians need specialized skills, training and education, usually a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related field.

Accounting & Financial

The University's business is managed through a number of centralized offices, including fiscal planning, investments, accounting, auditing and grant and contract administration. The business support centers also maintain extensive financial operations. These offices offer accounting and financial opportunities ranging from entry-level positions requiring two years of work experience and an elementary knowledge of accounting and business procedures, to those requiring four years of related experience, college-level course work and a broad knowledge of computerized accounting and other business systems.

Support Service

Support service staff enjoy contact with students, faculty, the publicand other University departments. They provide information on the services of their departments, and in turn process incoming information. Jobs included in this group are office assistants of various skill levels, receptionists, medical transcriptionists, medical records technicians, registrars, and assistants in personnel, purchasing and editing. Qualifications range from entry-level clerical skills to specialized, college-level training or experience in, for example, preparing material for publication or processing academic records.

Library

With over eleven million volumes, the Yale University Library is the second largest university research library in the country and the seventh largest in the world. The Library employs more than 600 staff members in a network of 22 school and departmental libraries. Clerical and technical staff are needed for binding, cataloging, public services, acquisitions, archives and administrative assistant positions. All entry-level positions require a high school diploma and prior work experience. Higher level positions require more related work experience and/or relevant college-level course work. Some library positions require foreign language skills.

Clinical

There is a need for trained personnel in the numerous clinics and medical research facilities on campus, including those at the School of Medicine and the University Health Services. Requirements for entry-level positions include a high school diploma and two years of experience. At the higher levels, clinical assistants and technologists are expected to have six years of experience or college-level training. Cytology, histology, medical photographers, sonographers and x-ray technicians may require certification or registration.

Museum

The Yale Art Gallery, the Yale Center for British Art and the Peabody Museum of Natural History offer job opportunities for those trained in preparing and constructing exhibits, maintaining collections or serving the needs of visitors. Positions include exhibit designers, museum assistants and museum technicians, all requiring specialized training and experience.

Service

The University is a community of almost 20,000 people who require a full range of day-to-day services: mail, phone networks, transportation, shipping and receiving, parking and security. Thus, positions in many categories make up this job family. Some of those requiring little work experience or training include: delivery, mail, communications, service, maintenance and materials assistants and athletic attendants. Security attendant positions require two years’ related experience or equivalent education in the field.

Technical Support

People performing specialized technical work may be found in all parts of the campus. There are positions at various levels for media technicians, microfilm operators, photographers, conservation assistants, printing assistants and representatives, computer support technicians and technical illustrators. A modest amount of training and experience is required for drafters and duplicating machine operators. Technical writers, control room specialists, telecommunications technicians and accelerator operators must have extensive training and experience in their specialties.
