An Initiative From:

Cedar Ridge School District

The Cedar Ridge-Arkansas 21C site serves a small, rural school district comprised of two preschools, a pre-kindergarten preschool, two elementary schools (K-6), and a junior senior high school. The total enrollment for the district varies around 560 students; of those, over 60% are eligible for free or reduced lunches, which allows us to be classified as school-wide Title I.

Approximately 75% of our students are scoring proficient or above on state mandated exams.

We received a start-up grant from the Bush Center at the end of February 2001. A coordinator was immediately hired, an advisory council was called together, and a needs assessment was conducted.

Parents identified after-school and summer programs as priorities. We have before-, and after and year-round programs at both preschools. We have after-school and summer programs for grades 5-9 funded through a 21CCLC grant. This program uses both paid staff and volunteer tutors.

For other students who are experiencing problems with particular subjects, we have formed a Homework Cooperative where parents can share their expertise with students other than their own. Many certified teachers have signed up on the district web site to work as tutors.

Mental Health services are available at all buildings through an agreement with Health Resources of Arkansas.

We have a well-established Early Childhood Program that includes two preschools and a pre-kindergarten designed for "September babies", with a qualified director and staff, including an early childhood special education teacher and a speech therapist.

Three and four year olds in our district are screened for hearing, speech, or vision problems, and developmental levels. If indicated, children are given more extensive evaluations to determine if services and referral are needed before they begin kindergarten.

To serve families with children birth to three years, we have a Parents As Teachers educator, funded by Arkansas Better Chance.

Please see Newark's website for more information on their program.
