An Initiative From:

North Little Rock School District

The North Little Rock School District believes that no significant learning occurs without significant relationships of mutual respect ... respectful relationships between administrator(s), teachers, children, parents, and the community.  The School of the 21st Century model has provided the framework and support to make this possible.

In July 2004, the North Little Rock School District applied for and received a  Schools for the 21st Century grant through the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.  The District’s ABC / 21C advisory committee, made up of parents, community members, and district personnel, is in the process of developing a comprehensive plan for child care and family support programs unique to the needs of the community.

At this time the North Little Rock School District 21C program currently offers:

  • A high quality early childhood program for “at risk” three and four year olds in seven schools serving 484 children and families. All pre-k classrooms have a 1 to 10 ratio consisting of a certified (P-4) teacher and highly qualified teacher assistant for every 20 children.
  • An infant and toddler center located on the Alternative high school campus that serves children (6 weeks to 3 years old) of district secondary students while they attend classes.
  • Extended Day and Summer Wrap-around Services at Redwood Early Childhood Center.
  • On-site services for children with special needs through the Tri-District Early Childhood Program.
  • High school peer mentors for all pre-k children through the NLRHS STARS program.
  • Family of Readers Program through a grant from RIF
  • An extensive parent involvement/parent education program including Brief Parenting Interventions – TIPS (Timely Information for Parents)
  • Support and training for child care providers including Pre-K ELLA and Brief Parenting Interventions.
  • Health and Education and Services including a Nutrition program for families through the Cooperative Extension Office, on site immunizations offered through Baptist Health at Redwood Early Childhood and Family Resource Center, vision and hearing screening, and a fund to purchase eye glasses if needed.
