COMMITTEES:
Borders
The Borders committee will negotiate the exact locations of borders in the Middle East, as well as how these borders will be maintained. Major focus areas will include the West Bank, southern Lebanon, and the Golan Heights.
Labor, Economics and Trade
This committee will negotiate economic aid and cooperation among parties in the region. It will also consider work permits and other labor issues.
Environment
The primary focus of the Committee on the Environment will be sustainable water management, and the allocation of the region's limited environmental resources.
Human Rights
The Human Rights Committee will discuss critical human rights guidelines and how these guidelines will be enforced. Potential issues include the treatment of political prisoners, occupied residents, and political and civil rights, including the right to vote, to education and to the free practice of religion.
Jerusalem and Religious Sites
The Committee on Jerusalem and Religious Sites will debate control over religious sites, both in Jerusalem and elsewhere. This committee will also consider the future of the city of Jerusalem.
Palestinian Statehood
This committee will consider the future of the Palestinian Authority, the timetable for statehood, and the potential government structure and political institutions of such a state.
Refugees/Tourism/Travel
This committee will deal with outstanding questions of refugees, tourism (particularly in light of the year 2000), and travel questions in the region, including specific arrangements for Gaza airport.
Terrorism, Regional Security and Arms Control
The Committee on Terrorism and Security will debate methods for curbing terrorism and politically and religiously motivated acts of violence, and consider cooperative counter-terrorism measures. Furthermore, it will discuss general issues concerning regional security and arms control.
