The Epson Dot-Matrix Printers found in public clusters offer the only free
printing at Yale, and are thus heavily used. In order for a Macintosh to
print sucessufully to an Epson printer, it must be properly connected to
the network, and it must boot with the latest version of the Epson
printer driver. The driver is a "Chooser Extension", and should be in the
Extensions folder within the Macintosh System folder. This file dists to
public cluster Macintoshes, and for student room connections can be found in:

Here are the fixes to some of the common Epson-related printing problems:
Paper Misaligned when it Ejects:
First reload the paper (someone might have simply turned the
printer off and on to clear the buffer so the printer no longer knows where
it is). Put the Epson into the paper-out position by pressing the left
hand most white button (the same button we used to tell people to press to
eject the paper). The Epson will push the paper out to where it thinks the
paper-out position should be (and this gets misaligned after awhile).
While holding down the Alt button, press the buttons with the arrows to
move the paper up or down. The printer will slowly move the paper and the
place you stop will be where the printer will eject the paper from now on.
Printer Eats its own Paper after Printing:
A lot of printers like to eat back the paper it just printed, and
the Epson has a tendency to eat itself more than others. Just make sure
that there's someplace for the paper to go after it comes out. The best
method seems to be make sure that the tray is down and that the Epson is
near the back of the table its on. This way the paper coming out can
harmlessly fall behind the table and not go back into the paper feed.
Epson will not Retract/Accept the Paper (General
misbehaving):
Make sure that the lever on the right hand side is set to the
middle position. That lever tells the printer where the paper should be
coming from. While you're at it, make sure that the left hand side lever
is set to the top most position.
Epson is not appearing in the Chooser:
If the problem is not with the network, it could be a problem with
the PowerPrint adapter. This problem can often be solved by turning the
printer and the adapter off and then back on. The adapter (it's the thing
that's attached to the back of the printer where the teleconnector hooks
upto) doesn't have a power switch so you'd need to pull the DC cable
(next to the teleconnector) out and in to turn it off.
