[PRINTMONITORS]
The Print Monitor is just that, a monitor. It will display any job spooled to the queue with the following status:
AddingJob is being sent from a mac to the server
Operator HoldThe job has made it to the novell server and is sitting there waiting to be released or deleted
ActiveThe job is being spooled from the server to the printer

The monitor updates its status periodically so there are minor delays in the queue status on the screen and the actual status of jobs (i.e. the job might look like it's finished spooling from the Mac, but still has "adding" status on the print monitor. Similarly, the job might be done printing but will still have an 'active' status on the print monitor mac). These delays are usually of 5 seconds or less.

Entries in the queue are identified by name. Macintoshes send their owner name (not machine name) to be displayed in the queue. Since cluster Macintoshes have identical Owner and Macintosh names, this is not a concern, but for computers in the residential colleges, users should know what name to look for at the Print Monitor. If your owner name is "Chappy" and your machine name is "Mos Eisley", "Chappy" (or a portion thereof) will be displayed next to the job. System 6 users have only one name - their Chooser name. The rules form requires room connected Macintoshes to be identified properly in the Sharing Setup Control Panel.

Here are the fixes to some of the common Print Monitor-related problems:

Reattatching to the Print Services Server:

The "Mount Print Services" script, located in the "Print Manager" RAM disk volume, is there so that if the PrintServices volume gets trashed or "Unexpectedly shuts down" people can just click on the QuickMount script and easily mount the server that way. The NetWare DA will also need to be reopened and the printer reselected, but it won't be necessary to boot off the floppy again.

Customizing a Print Monitor Disk for a College or Cluster:

  1. Make a disk from the disk image on Support:Disk images, called Print Monitor.
  2. Start up with it on a Mac SE or a Mac Plus which has a keybaord.
  3. After the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen you will see a WEB icon in the bottom left hand corner. When this icon disappears, press command-period continuosly to abort the RAM disk's loading process.
  4. Open the disk (NOT the quasi-RAM disk that was created). Click on "Mount print services." A box will appear asking you to enter a password. You should change BOTH the User ID and Password fields.
    Userids are:
    Berkeleypm.berkeley
    Branfordpm.branford
    Calhounpm.calhoun
    Davenport...
You should have been contacted by the Staff Network Specialist (Aleks) about the password assigned to your college's ID.
  5. When you have entered the changes, click on the SAVE button. Then close the window via the box on the top left corner. (Don't bother clicking on the Mount button).
  6. Try doubleclicking on the Mount Print Services icon and see if it mounts the Print Services volume properly. If you made a typo somewhere, you will get the Quickmount window again with some nondescriptive error message. Try reentering the userid and password info and try again.
  7. Trash Print Services.
  8. Open the Chooser. Change the Chooser name from "Zeus Print Monitor" to " Print Monitor". Then select Appleshare, go to the WEB Services zone, and mount the Novell_PC_Server. You'll be prompted for choosing amongst Standard Apple UAM's or Encrypted NetWare authentification.
  9. Select Standard Apple UAM's. Enter your userid (e.g. pm.berkeley) and assigned password. CLICK ON THE AUTOMOUNT BOX (the little box next to each volume) next to the Print Services volume. Click on the SAVE BOTH MY NAME AND PASSWORD radio button. You want this for uninterrupted automounting at startup. Click OK.
  10. Go to the Control Panels and select the RAMdisk+. Make sure all flags are checked. Press the Selections button. Make sure both the System Folder AND the Mount Print Serices are marked for inclusion in the RAM disk.
  11. Close the control panel and all desktop windows. Shut down the Mac.
  12. Lock the Disk!
  13. Now restart the Mac with your newly customized locked disk. It should boot, mount Print Services, and start the NetWare DA automatically. The only thing a user (or you) have to do is select the right queue to monitor in the control panel.
  14. If everything works fine, make a copy of your disk or a disk image so that all your college CAs have access to in case new disks need to be made. It's up to you how you handle this - I'd leave a disk in the computer room with instructions on what to do with it; you can choose another method if you like. Just make sure you have a backup disk somewhere.
