Email List FAQ

Getting On and Off the List

1. What do I do to subscribe the list?

Just refer to the top of the page, enter your email address and name you want to appear on the list, select "subscribe" button, then submit your request. Normally, you'll receive a confirmation email from ACSSY IT group in a few minutes. After that you'll receive every email that has been sent to the group.

2. I don't want more e-mail. How do I unsubscribe the list?

Again, refer to the top of the page, enter your email and name, select the "unsubscribe" button and submit your request. Soon you'll get the confirmation email about unsubscribing successfully.

3. I couldn't unsubscribe the list by method provided in Answer 2, what should I do?

Please contact ACSSY IT group, we'll unsubscribe you manually in two business days.

4. My email address just changed. What should I do?

You should simply unsubscribe your old email box and subscribe your new email box.

Sending and Receiving Messages

5. How can I send an email message to my fellow members?

Send your email to acssy@yale.edu. It should be forwarded to all on the list.

6. How does the ACSSY email list work (A little technical hint)?

List members send email to acssy@yale.edu. The moderator reviews the emails in acssy@yale.edu. If the email is not a spam and contains nothing offending some person, then it's forwarded to acssy-l@lists.yale.edu, which is the real email list system to reach every list member. Acssy-l is configured to only accept emails from a restricted set of members (acssy@yale.edu and ACSSY IT members). The following is a diagram of how this works.

A list member ====>acssy@yale.edu ==== [harmless (moderated)] ====>acssy-l@lists.yale.edu ====>Every list member

7. How quickly will my message be delivered?

As you've seen above, there's a moderator who is responsible to forward all the emails to the group. Usually, the moderator forwards emails several times a day. So, you can expect your email to reach the group in several hours. However, sometimes, due to kinds of reasons, it may take for 24 hours. Please understand our job of deleting tons of spam and forwarding every piece of useful messages for the group.

8. Why my email to the group was rejected?

Probably you sent your email to acssy-l@lists.yale.edu. Acssy-l is configured to receive a restricted group of email addresses. Any other addresses will be returned. Please do send your messages to the list: acssy@yale.edu

9. How long can my message be?

Like most people, our list members do not appreciate long unsolicited e-mail. If your message is over 100kb, including attachments, probably it will not be forwarded to the group.

10. Too many emails, can I receive that as a digest?

Sure, you can. Just send an email to listproc@lists.yale.edu with nothing but this line:

set acssy-l mail digest

Please do remember to leave the subject blank. Soon you'll receive a confirmation email from the list processor acknowledging that you've been set to a digest mode. Then you'll receive a daily digest at 0:01AM.

If you are using a commercial mailbox like MSN or YAHOO!, you may get an "error" message after the confirmation email, just discard it because it's caused by the ad info inserted by the mailbox providers(MSN, YAHOO!).

However, another problem is this email list digest does NOT support html tag well, so if somebody sends an html format email to the list, sometimes the digest will be a mass.

11. What if I want to switch from digest mode back to the normal mode?

Send another email to listproc@lists.yale.edu with nothing but:

set acssy-l mail

and leave the subject blank again.

Safety First

12. Is there any possible risk to receive emails from the list?

We, ACSSY IT staff, always try our best to ensure there is no spam or virus in our list email. However, this may not always be the truth, especially for viruses. You are responsible to opening any attachment or dangerous link in the list email by yourself. ACSSY is the list service provider, but could not guarantee your safety 100%. Please be aware of the possible dangers in emails as you always do when receiving emails other from ACSSY.

13. Why my email to acssy@yale.edu was not forwarded to the list?

This may be caused for several reasons.

First, our moderator deleted your email by mistake. It happens, although rarely. We are sorry about that and please send your email again if you don't see your email forwarded in 24 hours.

Second, your email was tagged as a junk or spam by the email filter. Forgive these stupid filters.

Third, we, ACSSY IT staff viewed your message as not-so-friendly to and unwanted by the list members. ACSSY reserves the right not to forward any emails we get in acssy@yale.edu without any notification.

14. What Will You Do With My Email Address?

ACSSY takes your privacy seriously. We will not sell, rent, or loan our list to anyone for any reason. We are committed to simply providing you a pleasant platform to communicate with each other.
