Important Instructions on Test Score Reporting
|
What test results should I report? Yale requires results from all of the SAT I and SAT II tests or all of the ACT tests you have taken. If you choose to fulfill our testing requirement with SAT scores, then it is not necessary to send any scores from the ACT, even if you have taken the ACT. And if you choose to fulfill the requirement using the ACT, you do not need to send us any SAT scores, unless you wish. However, and this is important, if you elect to use the SAT scores, you must report all scores from all SAT exams (both SAT I and SAT II) that you have taken. If you elect to use ACT scores, you must report all scores from all ACT exams you have taken. And if you choose to use a combination of SAT and ACT results, we require that you report all scores from both agencies. |

How should I report my scores?
Students reporting SAT results are required to have official SAT I and SAT II test results from all test dates reported to Yale directly from the College Board.
Students reporting ACT results are required to have official results from at least one test date reported to Yale directly from ACT, and must self-report all other available ACT results when they file their Yale Common Application. (See below for the reasons ACT reporting differs from SAT reporting.)
*Please note: we cannot guarantee that February, 2010 ACT results will arrive in time for consideration. To increase the likelihood of a timely report, test in December of 2009 or before, and list Yale as a score recipient when you register for the test.
What should I do if I receive new test scores after submitting my application?
If you receive SAT I or SAT II results after you submit your application, you should request that an updated report of all SAT test scores be sent to Yale. If you receive ACT results after you submit your application you may provide an update either by having an official report sent to Yale from ACT, or by asking your counselor to include the new test results on your Midyear Report, or by sending an unofficial score report to us by fax or mail. (Our file room fax number is (203) 777-6120.)
Some colleges will consider only my highest scores. Why does Yale require a full testing history?
In some cases an applicant’s testing history can provide useful contextual information to the admissions committee. Although the committee works with summary information that focuses attention on the highest officially reported scores you attained on each section of the SAT I, the highest scores on individual subject tests and/or the highest ACT composite score, committee members and the readers of your application will have access to a full history of all officially reported scores.
Why do Yale’s SAT and ACT reporting procedures differ?
First, let's be clear on the difference: students who choose to submit ACT scores are required to send official results from the ACT for at least one test date, plus provide us with self-reported scores from all ACT test dates. Students who submit SAT scores must send official results from all SAT test dates (both SAT I and SAT II’s).
We have taken this approach because there is a cost differential in the reporting of SAT and ACT results. The College Board will send a cumulative record of all SAT I and SAT II tests for one fee. For a similar fee, the ACT will send results for just one test date. Because we do not feel that students reporting ACTs should incur greater costs, we require that students pay to send at least one official ACT score report and self-report all other ACT results. We will confirm self-reported test results if we feel it is necessary.
If I have taken the SAT I and at least two SAT II Subject tests, and the ACT with writing, must I report all scores from both testing agencies? Can I send only the SAT test scores or only the ACT test scores provided that I fulfill Yale’s testing requirement?
As long as you fulfill our testing requirement with a complete set of score reports from one agency (either the SAT or the ACT), you are not required to report scores from both agencies. You can choose either to report all of your SAT results (both SAT I and SAT II) or all of your ACT results, according to the directions above. If you want us to have scores from both the SAT and the ACT, you must report all scores from both tests, again using the directions for each agency that we have provided above.
How should I complete the online Common Application ‘Tests’ section if some of the colleges I’m applying to allow me to withhold some of my scores and others, such as Yale, do not?
The online Common Application allows students to create an initial Common Application and then, after it has been submitted, to replicate that version, make changes to it, and save the new copy under a different name. You are allowed to make up to ten different versions (although we hope you don’t need to do that!). To accommodate different test reporting requirements you could create one application named ‘Score Choice’, in which you list your Score Choice colleges on the ‘My Colleges’ page. Then you could create another version as needed for colleges with requirements similar to Yale’s, listing those colleges on a separate ‘My Colleges’ page. (The system allows you to list a particular college on only one application ‘version’.) There are instructions for creating more than one application version in the Common Application Instructions section called ‘Application Versions’.
Must I submit an official report for Advanced Placement or test results?
No. Instead, you may self-report any AP scores in the spaces provided on the Common Application or on the Yale Supplement. Only those students who ultimately enroll at Yale will need to submit an official score report should they choose to apply for acceleration credit from Yale College.
