| While
it is entirely possible to tell a story in ASL using only one classifier
handshape, most stories make use of several classifiers. In the
following seven images you can see where Frank Dattolo, playing Maria,
describes to Feste the dangers of alienating one’s employer. Feste
responds that he is “resolved” or most likely solvent, “on two
points.” That is, he relies on both Olivia and Orsino for money.
Maria responds, “That if one break, the other will hold;
or, if both break,
your gaskins fall.” Here you can see Frank using a combination of
classifiers, the suspenders are a 4 handshape, (the suspenders when they
fly up after being cut are 5 Classifiers.) The motion of cutting the
suspenders uses a 2 classifier in an iconic gesture of scissors cutting
the suspenders off. Finally you can see his gaskins, or pants, which,
once they fall, reveal his bare legs, or a 2 Classifier resembling a
person’s legs.
