Yale Badminton Club News:

02/01/04
We went to Cornell ... and we WON !!! See the scores and "Captain's summary".
01/26/04
Kudos to our megastar Chris Hales, who won both the Men's singles and Men's Doubles (with Radu Milevschi) in the CT open yesterday.

I've apparently converted this page into a shrine for anime. I dunno if that is good or bad. Feedback anyone? Check out the team member and board links to see what damage I did. It took me a lot longer to do than you probably think.
11/08/03
Made some changes to the board page. The last time I tried to make a change (10/26/03) I basically screwed up the page so bad Dipankar had to stop his research for 5 days to fix all the problems I caused. It was all Netscape Composer's fault, I swear*. Anyways, things are looking good now. We've been pretty busy this past week playing against Boston University and University of Pennsylvania. The results of those games should be up soon (thank you Dipankar). We're playing MIT tomorrow in Boston and probably going to postpone the rest of our games to december or next spring. Special thanks to all the girls who have been taking the time to play for us (we love you)-- Judy Jou, Heyman Oo, Janet Lee, Lily Horng, Anna Dolinksy, and Vicky Nguyen.

10/26/03
Just to let you all know, Dipankar Maitra and I (Andrew Lee) have taken over this webpage.  I've been trying to make some new updates/changes, but it's been pretty hard as I have no idea of what I am doing.  A word of advise to all you future webmasters:  Nestcape Composer is FREE (it took me 6 hours to figure this out).  Anyways, Dipankar's been a good teacher, but even he cannot stop me from ruining the hard work Yi Long and Ben have done in making the page what it is today (or rather what it was three days ago).  MWAHAHAHAHA

Ok, yeah. The schedule is now updated. I will try adding those pics soon...hehehe
9/22/02
Oh has it been a long time since I was last able to do this. I finally have my dsl set up in my apartment. As soon as I can get it from Andrew, I'm going to update the schedule and everything.

...and be prepared for the fury of my brand new digital camera!

The real news, though, is that Andrew Lee will be your new captain this year. Everyone be nice to him =)
5/10/02

I'm done with finals!

..which means I finally had time to put up all the info I have about the Yale Invitational. I'm still missing a lot though, so please check it out here, and let me know if there is anything that I should add/edit. Thanks guys. Oh, and check for more photos soon...

Anna paid her dues!!!
3/25/02

In general, nobody should abuse the badminton team list, but many of you may remember this email conversation that went back and forth a while back. It was too good to miss, so I'm finally posting it for those who never saw. Sorry I took so long to get around to putting it up =)

Bianca: I'll commit to anything after spring break that truly needs a girl
Chris : anything?
Bianca: yes, anything - as long as it involves a badminton racket and a court - :)
Anna : hmm, i wouldn't even go that far. some people are pretty imaginative.
Leo : ... that doesn't make it much better Bianca :-)
Bianca: I know, I'll have to strangle chris when I find him...

The end. (at least to the best of my knowledge!)

The Boston Open was incredible. Tough too...Anna and I were slaughtered repeatedly. James is the only person from Yale who won a game (his first consolation match).
But, there were some amazing players there to watch.
The winners in each division were:
MS Chibing Wu def. Bob Malaythong
MD Tony Gunawan/Bob Malaythong slaughtered Andy Chong/Chibing Wu
XD Andy Chong/Szilvia Szombati def. Tony Gunawan/Connie Hwang
LS Elie Wu def. Szilvia Szombati
LD Janis Tan/Elie Wu def. Melinda Keszthelyi/Szilvia Szombati

For those of you who don't know who Tony Gunawan is or what you were missing, I quote:
"Tony Gunawan has been the leading exponent of Mens Doubles in the world over the past few years. The reigning Olympic, World, and All England Champion, Tony has won it all and over an unusually short time-span, in what has been a glittering badminton career."
It goes on from there, but I'm not going to bother. You get the idea. This guy could kill Chris with his weak hand =(
3/9/02

This weekend was the Harvard-Smith tournament. Everyone who went did very well:
Kelvin MS C Finalist
Ben MS C Semifinalist
Peng LS C Semifinalist
Ben/Shekhar MD D Winners
Ben/Peng XD D Semifinalists

Congratulations everyone, and thanks for making it such a fun time.

Last weekend first-year law student Chris Hales won the men's singles at the Mid-Atlantic Classic badminton tournament in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. The competition is one of six national ranking tournaments held by USA Badminton each year. Prior to coming to law school at Yale, Hales spent several years balancing his undergraduate education with international competitions, representing the United States multiple times since 1994. However, until this weekend he had never won a classic tournament, despite being in the finals several times. In the tournament final, Hales fought off match point and then scored seven consecutive points to take the victory. In earlier rounds he avenged his February quarterfinal loss to Radu Milevsci in the Connecticut Open. Hales came to Yale to train his brain. But apparently the training sessions with the Yale club badminton team in Payne Whitney gymnasium have been paying off as well.

The Trump birdies have arrived! I'm pretty sure they will be better than the swallows, for relatively little added cost.

That means nobody is buying the last 2 tubes of Swallows, though, so I'm going to let the beginners use those this Saturday. As a reminder, this Saturday from 1-3pm is set aside for a group of newish players. Club practice from 3-6:30 will be as usual.
1/26/02

Today was the Connecticut Open. Andrew, Chun, Dipankar, James, Kelvin, Linda, Li Ju, and I all did our best and put up a good fight against some very tough competition. Special pity goes out to Dipankar who played Hubert Kostro in the first round. I was equally honored in my first matchup against Andy Chong, 15-1, 15-1. Thanks Andy for those two points =)
(If this means nothing to you, please see the U.S. national rankings.

Congratulations to our new superstar, Chris Hales, who made it to the quarterfinals of men's singles. If he hadn't been out of training for several months with carpal tunnel syndrome, my money would have been on Chris to beat 3rd seeded Radu Milevsvhi.
It will give us something to look forward to at the upcoming Boston Open.
11/9/01

Tomorrow, we will be traveling to our first tournament together as a team. Wish the following people luck!

Men's Singles: Women's Singles: Men's Doubles: Mixed Doubles:
9/17/01

The gym administration has switched our times around. Check the schedule again. Sorry people - there is nothing I can do. =(
9/15/01

I am going to order 25 tubes of Swallow Club Grade shuttlecocks soon. All team members will be expected to buy a tube, which won't leave many extras. If you want a tube for yourself, email Ben soon!
9/13/01

The new schedule has been posted. Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays are exclusively for team members. The other practices are for all club members alike. Email Jon if you want to join the team.
9/12/01

For all those interested in training/competing with the team, we will be having an informal meeting on Sept. 12th at 8pm on the 5th floor of the gym.
Attending this meeting doesn't commit you to anything. We will just be discussing important issues, like how often the team will practice each week. So, if you want your input heard, please show up.
Or, if you can't make the meeting, but are interested in the club, just email me.
9/1/01

It's a new year, with all new news.
Except, there isn't really any news yet =(

Umm...Welcome back to the old gang. We have a lot of talented players in the incoming class. So, with a little enthusiasm from you all, we should be able to put together a very strong team. And, with a little practice, I know we will be able to defeat Harvard and avenge ourselves of last year's travesty in the HYP tournament (read all about it here).
Hope to see you all on the courts,

Ben Kass
