U.S. Mail From Yale to Yale

An increasing number of Yale departments are sending mail to other Yale departments through US mail. Possibly the reasoning is that the mail will be delivered quicker. Actually, this slows down your mail and costs your department money.Campus Mail picks up your U.S. mail and delivers it to the U.S.Postal Service on Brewery Street. Mail then travels to Wallingford, where it is sorted and sent back to the Brewery Street terminal. The following day it is delivered to Campus Mail at 100 John Murphy Drive. If a P.O. Box number was used for the address, the Postal Service would have sorted it into a sack and, upon reaching our mailroom, would go right onto our truck for delivery that day.

If you did not use a P.O. Box number, your letter will remain in our mailroom for hand sorting by our mail clerks. Depending on volume of mail, your mail will be sorted in 24-48 hours, then be put on our mail truck for delivery. If the address is insufficient, the mail will be returned to your department.

If your letter is sent by Campus Mail, it will be picked up and sorted the same day and reach the destination the following morning.

A lot of extra traveling and time is wasted if it is sent U.S. mail. This is true, especially if you do not use a PO Box. Street addresses mean hand sorting and require extra time!

Increased postal costs for your department budget? Yes. Remember, Campus Mail is FREE.

If you must send to another Yale department using US mail, the PO Box is to be used, not the street address.

Not sure about whether an address is a campus address? Call the Campus Mail office at 4-9310 or check our web site. Also on our web page is a flow chart showing the trip your letter takes. Check it out at http//www.yale.edu/campusmail/flowchart.htm
