Upset Caller

Over the past two years we have attempted to inform the Yale community of the importance of proper addressing. The following is an example of just one telephone call we received at the Campus Mail office.

A gentlemen called Campus Mail wondering why his doctor had not received a piece of mail sent over a week ago from a nearby town. He had used the address the doctor gave him: doctor's name, Yale School of Medicine, 333 Cedar Street, New Haven, CT. No department. No box number. No Zip code or add-on. He called the doctor to be sure the piece was received. When he was told it was not, he resent it after checking with the doctor on the proper address and being told the same information. When the second piece was not received, he called Campus Mail confused and upset with the situation. We explained that the mail had an insufficient address and would either be delayed as the person would have to be looked up (assuming the spelling on the name was correct), or the piece would be returned as insufficient address. He was confused and upset that the doctor had given him incorrect information not just once, but twice.

Please help us get the word out to EVERYONE at Yale that gets mail. Every department -- with only 2 or 3 exceptions -- has a unique post office box number and zip code plus add-on. This is not an internal sort. It is a real post office box. The street address should NOT be used! Proper address format is as follows:

Person's name
Department name
Yale University
PO Box _ _ _ _ _ _ (6-digit number)
New Haven, CT 06520- (last four digits of box number)
