Yale College boasts a long history of sending its students to a variety of corporations, organizations, and government agencies to complete internships. While the great majority of students serve internships over the summer, a small percentage choose to intern during the academic year.
For assistance with this process please contact Lori Ferrara at 203.432.0800 or send an e-mail to the Yale College Internship Program.
Internship Program Mission
The mission of the internship program is to facilitate experiential education that will bridge the rigorous academics and extra-curricular programs of Yale College to the world that awaits our students upon graduation. The counseling staff of Undergraduate Career Services works individually with each student to assist with internship goal setting, securing an internship, and making the most out of the internship experience.
Internship Guidelines for Employers
While there are no specific guidelines that organizations must meet in terms of the opportunities they offer, the most successful internship experiences for both student and employer are those that involve substantive work assignments similar to those of an entry level professional in a given field. Many employers choose to give interns ownership of a particular project that has been sitting on the "back burner" due to lack of staff and time. Though administrative responsibilities are a part of many jobs and functions, it is important that employers balance these types of tasks with assignments and projects to allow the student substantial opportunity to develop their skill set and grow professionally. Read more about Starting and Maintaining A Quality Internship Program (compiled by Michael True, Director, Internship Center - Messiah College).
Yale College does not grant credit to students for internship experience. While many for-profit corporations are able to offer Yale interns competitive compensation for their work, Undergraduate Career Services understands that many not-for-profit organizations and agencies may not have the funds to offer students a competitive salary. In this case, we encourage employers to reimburse students for commuting costs, offer a one-time stipend to help with expenses, or compensate your intern in some manner to help defray his/her expenses. Even a modest hourly salary will enable a talented, motivated student to cover basic expenses and accept an internship with your organization.
