Fall '11: A Wonderful Neverland to Occupy Your Weekend, Devika Mittal

The performance ends just as it starts--powerfully, dazzlingly, in a show of lights, music and grace--as if to suggest that the musical notes plucked the strings of their bodies. What is most striking about A Different Drum is how the dancers seem not only to act but to feel vividly the emotions that their movements portray; in one case, tears spilled from a dancer's eyes as she wilted away from the crowd.

Spring '11:
Drum gets lost in beautiful, ambitious dream, Zeenat Mansoor
On posters featuring a gorgeous brunette flying through the air in a flowing red dress, the latest debut from A Different Drum at the Off Broadway Theater guarantees to put the viewer in a state of blissful serenity. Fortunately, the show fulfills the posters' promise. An exhilarating mix of ballet, melodic music and dark, edgy themes, "Sweet Dreams" achieves downright orgasmic beauty.
Spring '10: To the Beat of Different Drums, Brenna Hughes Neghaiwi

When A Different Drum's dance show, "Criminal Moves," starts off to six dancers capering across the stage in sweet summer dresses to Ingrid Michaelson's "You and I," you know you're in for a nice deal...The pieces themselves are very diverse, drawing from a variety of dance genres accompanied by music ranging from Lady Gaga to Yo-Yo Ma, and even including the sounds of "Amazon Rain Forest" by Nature Whispers. Many performances are fun, while others are provocative and some are even haunting...the show put on by the ADD dance crew is truly impressive and definitely worth a watch.

A Different Drum Doesn't Miss a Beat with 'Criminal', Gabrielle Karol

The rapidity with which A Different Drum moves between techniques and styles, allows the outstanding performances to shine through and leave a lasting impression on the viewer...The seniors also lead the best finale that A Different Drum has performed in recent years, summing up the show's theme with a dynamic interpretation of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal"...Douglas alone, however, is reason enough to pay five dollars to see "Criminal Moves." In piece after piece, she fills the stage figuratively with her oversized personality and infectious smile, not to mention literally with her incredible flexibility and control...outstanding performances by individual dancers throughout the entire show make "Criminal Moves" entertaining for the full two hours.

Spring '08: ADD is so into 'Pants', Nicholas Niarchos

With smiles that don't betray recent events and outstanding shows of physicality, ADD manages to be at once fun and bedazzling...The highlight of the show is the last dance of the first act, "Pay No Attention," guest choreographed by Jessica Nicoll. Dancers appear and disappear from behind propped-up mats in a starkly lit surrounding. The neon extravagance of the costumes contrasts with the black of the mats and the white of the backdrop, and leaping and cavorting figures extend arms, legs and heads at intervals from their hiding places. The piece is just what ADD stands for: frivolity with a genuine creative element - here, the dancers really shine in their respective outfits...It is difficult to articulate in words the impressiveness of the dancers' movements and timing. Each dance, choreographed by a different member of the company, shifts from the synchronized to the outstanding and the variety of rolls, spins and sheer acrobatic talent will keep an audience on its toes way after the show has ended.

Fall '05: ADD Drums Up a Rhythmic Joy, Saskia Leggett

Alternating between fluid form and sharp, crisp gestures, ADD shows off an originality of movement that strikes the same chord as the emotion of the selected music. Through diverse dances broken by spoken-word interludes, "Dance/Speak" perfectly reflects the dancers' ability to bring a powerful voice to movement.

Spring '05: A Different Drum Finds Its Own Beat, Dan Hammond

Sophia Emigh's '06 "quark" begins as an intimate duet between two dancers accompanied by strings and soft blue lighting, but morphs halfway through into a frantically athletic six-person piece complete with rolls and leaps, accompanied by frenzied drumming and stark red light. Either section would be good on its own, but together they approach pulse-pounding excellence.

Spring '04: A Different Drum Fills OBT With Spring, Susan Posluszny

The group's talented dancers and commitment to showcasing diverse types of dance make for an evening of varied and interesting performance. With dances to Train, salsa, Elvis Costello and Bach, one never knows what to expect. And perhaps that is what makes the unexpected intricacy all the more absorbing.
