If
you are generating low risk contaminated laboratory waste
you will place all of your soft waste in a biohazard
bag, available from the stockroom, that can be pulled
from a holder, or a Yale provided bag-box unit. All pointed
plastic or glass items that could puncture a bag when
pulled should be placed in a Yale provided bag-box unit.
These bag-box units come in two sizes for your convenience
and are generally available in the same location where
the disposal carts are located. All sharps waste - syringes,
razor blades, and scalpel blades - should be placed directly
into needle boxes. Needle boxes continue to be available
from the stockroom. When containers of low risk waste
are full, and please do not over stuff them, seal the
bag with tape and close the lid being sure to minimize
the pressure being applied to the bag (never apply pressure
to the bag with your hands). Please continue to complete
the waste generator information stickers and place them
on these waste containers or complete the building and
laboratory number identifiers found on the box. All of
these containers - bags, bag-box units, and needle boxes
- are placed directly into the carts in an upright position.
If a cart is not available in your area, place the waste
into one of the Yale provided large bag-box units (but
not our vendor's - Stericycle - disposal box). Close
and seal the bags and boxes with tape. Please also note
that this waste does not have to be autoclaved before
EHS removes it. This should be a big savings in your
time.
