Contaminated Laboratory Waste
- Moderate - High Risk |
|
If you are generating moderate to high risk contaminated
laboratory biomedical waste, which includes waste generated
from working with human, animal, or plant pathogens, the
procedure is slightly different. The soft waste and all
pointed plastic or glass items should be placed in a red
bucket. The red bucket provides additional assurance that
this waste will be properly contained and no one will
suffer a cut or puncture wound. To have red buckets delivered
to your laboratory call 432-6545. Red buckets will only
be delivered to laboratories generating moderate to high
risk biomedical waste. If any waste sharps (which we should
avoid when working with these agents) such as syringes,
needles, or blades are generated, they should be placed
directly into a needle box. Needle boxes continue to be
available from the stockroom. All of the moderate to high
risk waste must continue to be autoclaved or chemically
treated before being placed in the carts or large bag-box
units. This decreases the exposure risk to personnel handling
this waste. These waste containers should be labeled with
Yale's new sticker that identifies them as containing
moderate risk materials and identifies the type of treatment
imposed on the waste prior to being picked up by EHS.
