Exporting Research Materials
Yale personnel export a variety of materials and information. Some exports are physical exports where tangible material is shipped to another country. Other exports are deemed exports; the transfer of information or technology to foreign nationals while they are in the United States. Fines for violating export control regulations are currently up to $1 million and 20 years in jail.
Whether you are exporting or importing, every shipment needs a commercial invoice so customs will be able to assess what you are shipping and the value. If you don't have a commercial invoice for the shipment, you will need to make one.
A commercial invoice can be made on your department letterhead. The invoice must state a ship to and from address, description of what you are shipping, quantity, value of shipment (everything must have a value), and the reason why you are shipping.
EHS will help evaluate export requirements involving research materials prior to shipping. Please process these shipments through
Yale's Express Shipping Took, eShipGlobal. EHs will evalute your specific shipment and approve when all exort control checks have been completed. If it is determined that an export license is required EHS will assist with the application process.
For assistance with exports not involving research materials please contact Don Deyo, Director of International Agreements and Export Control Licensing at 785-3814.
