PARTS WASHERS
Project Overview
Parts washers are used throughout campus to clean tools and other components using a solvent to dissolve the dirt and grease. EHS worked with each department and Yale Purchasing to see if they were willing to change vendors to reduce hazardous waste generations.
Changes
Six parts washers located throughout the University were replaced with units that use a petroleum distillate based solvent rather than an ignitable solvent. This switch allowed an entire hazardous waste stream to be eliminated.
Benefits
- A safer and healthier alternative was accepted by each department renting the units.
- Reduction of approximately 2000 lbs. of hazardous waste per year.
- Approximately $2,300 savings per year.
