Barberry 
Berberis thunbergii 


An undesirable and exotic armed shrub that can grow to 1.5 meters tall. Native to Japan, intoduced in United States for hedges. The triple thorns that occur at leaf scars are leaf variations. Buds form in a "tuft of leaves." An extremely adaptable shrub - shade-tolerant but does best in full sun and can withstand dry conditions.

BUDS: small, ovoid

BARK: The inner bark is yellow.

TWIG: Slender, grooved, purplish brown by second year.  Spines simple; pith relatively large and continuous.

HABITAT: Originally used as a hedge, but becoming naturalized in open and disturbed forests.
