Pignut Hickory
Carya glabra


Medium sized tree growing to between 15 and 20 meters tall and 30 to 80 centimeters in diameter.  Slow-growing; long-lived; sprouts readily after fire, cutting or browsing.  Named pignut for the very bitternuts which were considered fit only for pigs.

BUDS: Small terminal bud, dome shaped, grayish and somewhat pubescent.  Lateral buds smaller and with a blunt tip.

TWIGS: Thin and glabrous; greenish becoming grayish.

BARK: Thin, tight surface breaking into fissures and sometimes separating into small loose strips.

HABITAT: Xeric to dry-mesic oak-hickory forests.
