Field/Lecture Notes:
One of the few willow species we can ID, this many stemmed shrub
or small tree with an open, rounded crown grows to 20 or 30 ft. It
has huge, silky, furry flower catkins which appear in late winter or early
spring.
BUDS: Furry; one bud scale.
TWIGS: Stout and brown; hairy when young.
BARK: Scaly and fissured; gray.
HABITAT: Wet meadows and borders of streams and lakes.
