A non-evergreen heath, around 10 ft. tall, with dry fruits. 

BUDS: Large end buds; loose or shedding, hairy outer scales 

TWIGS: Hairy 

BARK: Red-brown and separating in loose strips; older bark grayish and flaking 

HABITAT: Swamps and sandy soils
