Witch Hazel 
Hamamelis virginiana L. 


An aromatic shrub or small tree, growing to 8 meters tall, with an open crown and small yellow flowers in autumn or winter and fruit pods which forcefully eject seeds.

BUDS: Stalked; hairy and without scales

TWIGS: Slender and zigzag; may have gray or rust-colored hairs

BARK: Smooth or rough in patches; light brown

HABITAT: Moist soil; understory plant

USES: The aromatic leaves, twigs, and bark can provide a medicinally used astringent or toilet water. Forked branches were once believed to direct one to a source of water.
