Al:Ca ratio is often used instead of Al concen.
Al toxicity to plants is ameliorated by Ca. Thus, it is the relative amount of Al to Ca that is important, not just the actual concentrations of individual elements.
Al:Ca ratios in wood are correlated with those in soil solution.
