Site 4 Description

Site Location: Bellow the heavily used logging road.

Description: This is an ephemeral stream (although it was always running vigorously during our ten weeks of spring observations). This is an interesting site just below a bedrock formation.  The stream comes out of the wetland onto the heavily used logging road.  The water pools on the road and then spills across a large bedrock formation.  The water sheets across the bedrock then pools at the bottom and begins running in a channel again.

Cover:  This site is exposed to direct sunlight due to the gap in the canopy crated by logging road as well as the natural position in the watershed.  Additionally the surface bedrock has limited the soil depth and thus retarded canopy establishment. The sampling site is only covered 40% of the time.

Channel characteristics: The stream at this site is coming out of a small pool that was formed at the bottom edge of bedrock.  The channel bottom is a mix of bedrock and large cobble.

Reason Selected: We wanted to monitor the impact of the logging road.  The stream actually pools on the road  for a short time and site 4 is the first reasonable site to grab a good sample.
