Site 8 Description
Site Location: Bellow all logging activities in the surrounding watershed
on the secondary outlet from the wetland.
Description: This is an ephemeral stream (although it was always
running vigorously during our ten weeks of spring observations). The channel
is meandering across various bedrock formations leaving dry channels and
high flow migration paths across small “islands” , depositional bars made
of large cobble, and bedrock “lifts” . The channel is running at
around a 10 percent grade and is extremely sinuous. The land surrounding
the stream supports a thick young growth forest with fair ground cover,
bushes and shrubs.
Cover: The riparian cover is constant with the second or third
growth forest in the surrounding valley. The area has been
logged in the past and the riparian areas were not excluded from the logging.
Due to the dense young growth in the riparian area it probably shaded 90
percent of the time.
Channel characteristics: Channel is a an entrenched channel with a bedrock,
boulder, cobble, mixed bed.
Reason Selected: We wanted to document the “final product” of the changes
in land management practices on the water quality on this second outlet.
