  • Graduate Internship, The Hunger Project
Office of Public Policy & Client Advocacy, The Children’s Aid Society

The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) was founded in 1853 and serves over 120,000 needy New York City children and their families each year, the majority of whom live at or below the poverty level. Based on studies showing that one-third of the nation is experiencing growing problems with hunger, we believe that thousands of our families may be living with significant food shortages. The Hunger Project endeavors to (1) identify these families and (2) help them to enroll in a food stamp program.

We are seeking a summer intern to assist the director of the Office of Public Policy & Client Advocacy (OPPCA) to design and implement a survey of 100 CAS families to document the number who may be eligible for and in need of food stamps, but who are not enrolled. The intern will then draft a report analyzing the collected data. This report will be published in OPPCA’s quarterly periodical, Advocacy Notes, and will lay the groundwork for the creation of a new food stamp access program.

The ideal intern is a graduate student, preferably with a background in public policy and community social work. S/he should be comfortable interacting with a multi-ethnic population, have strong writing and organizational skills, be bilingual in Spanish and English, and have a commitment to helping needy families access supports that enable them to move out of poverty.

The intern will receive a stipend of $300 per week for ten weeks and will report to Cathleen Clements, Esq., Legal Director, Office of Public Policy & Client Advocacy, The Children’s Aid Society, 105 East 22nd Street, New York, New York 10010.

A letter of application, writing sample, and resume may be faxed to (212) 358-8935 or E-mailed to cathleenc@childrensaidsociety.org.
