Yale Settles Grad Labor Charges
Agrees to Post First Labor Board Notice for Grad Teachers at Private University
March 29, 2000

Today, Yale University conceded that it would post the first ever National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) notice directed towards graduate teachers. Faced with an imminent trial, Yale finally agreed to settle the NLRB's charge that the Yale administration commited Unfair Labor Practices against graduate teachers during the 1995-1996 grade strike.

According to the terms of the settlement, notices clearly affirming the right of all employees "to engage in self-organization; To form, join or assist any union; To bargain collectively through a representative of their own choosing" would be posted across the entire campus. This notice is Yale's response to graduate teachers.

More importantly, Yale University states on the notice that "We will not do anything which interferes with ... the exercise of these rights."

Yale University has finally acknowledged that reprisals for union activity are unethical and illegal.

The notice follows the standard NLRB format for resolving Unfair Labor Practices. Applying it to graduate teachers in private universities is unprecedented.

The settlement did not involve a formal ruling on the employment status of graduate teachers. Such a formal ruling is normally made when employees petition for a union election. A formal ruling on the employee-status of private university graduate teachers at NYU is expected within the next few days.
