GHLI Conference

The Global Health Leadership Institute (GHLI) Conference convenes senior health practitioners, policymakers, and researchers from around the world to facilitate collaborative, locally-driven solutions in strengthening health systems.

The GHLI conference is a team-based leadership experience where country delegations - comprised of senior leadership from ministries of health, nongovernmental organizations and academic institutions - come to Yale to address a targeted health system challenge of national priority. Past delegations have focused on a range of health system issues including: reducing maternal mortality, improving the performance of the health workers, increasing hospital management capacity and improving the quality of clinical outcomes.

The GHLI conference is a two-year cycle – during the first year, delegations develop work plans that address their respective country’s health system challenge, including evaluation plans to measure progress.  Between conferences, delegations take action to implement their work plans in their home countries and then return to Yale the following year to share lessons learned and further develop their plans.

During each week-long conference at Yale, delegates participate in interactive lectures, cross-country roundtable discussions, keynotes and facilitated work sessions. Delegates are exposed to prominent experts in global health and practical education in strategic problem solving and leadership through the GHLI Curriculum.  Yale faculty support delegations as they apply the GHLI Curriculum to their country’s health system issue. Delegations are also supported by GHLI Fellows, who provide 8-10 weeks of in-country assistance to help move work plans forward.

The 2012 GHLI Conference will be held at Yale from June 4 to 8, 2012. Delegations from Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Rwanda, and South Africa will return to Yale for the second phase of the conference to share country implementation and policy experiences related to their work plans. Issues addressed will include mental health, maternal mortality, human resource management, and management capacity building. The GHLI Conference is supported by The Glaser Progress Foundation and the Hecht-Albert Global Health Fund.
