GHLI Programs in the UK
Established in 2007, the Health and Social Care Leadership Development Program (HSCLDP) is a partnership between the Yale Global Health Leadership Institute and the South Essex Partnership University National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust (SEPT) designed to equip health care managers with the tools needed to succeed in the new financial and operational framework of the NHS.
Like other GHLI programs, the HSCLDP includes didactic learning focused on management and leadership, combined with a real world field-based project. During the first week-long session held in the United Kingdom, participants are exposed to a variety of management topics including systems thinking, strategy, financial management and leadership. Participants also spend a significant portion of the week on a case study designed specifically for the program that addresses key issues currently facing NHS managers.
At the conclusion of the first session, participants apply the management concepts and tools they learned to design and implement a quality improvement project at their home institution. The outcomes and findings of these projects are later presented at the second advanced session held at Yale University. In addition to the project presentations, the advanced session provides a first-hand look into the United States health care system and how competition can drive both innovation and improved quality.
In addition to the HSCLDP, GHLI and SEPT have expanded their partnership to include bringing together mental health professionals from the United States, the United Kingdom and Ghana in an effort to catalyze the development of a new framework for mental health service delivery in Ghana. This will be the focus of the Ghanaian delegation during the 2011 GHLI Conference.
