Resources for Tenants

The following links are provided to help you settle into your new life in New Haven and the surrounding areas. Endorsements or recommendations of any particular service are not made by Yale University. This is not an exhaustible list, and we encourage you to do your own additional research.

Licensing for New Haven Landlords

In conjunction with the City of New Haven and the Livable City Initiative, a license is required when one or more dwelling units are rented in a two or more unit residential structure. The LCI licensing and inspection program is designed to protect the health, safety & welfare of New Haven residents and improve their quality of life. A rental license helps assure renters and those charged with protecting the city that the licensed property has met minimum housing standard and provides landlords with consistent enforcement codes. For more information please visit the following website: www.cityofnewhaven.com. Livable City Initiative can also be reached at (230) 946–7090 or by fax at (203) 946–4899. If your property fits the requirements as a multiple dwelling unit, the license number must be provided with the listing.

Renters who believe that a property owner or sublettor has failed to comply with applicable housing laws, regulations, or provisions of a lease, or has engaged in conduct that is otherwise unethical or wrongful are encouraged to file a complaint with the Off Campus Housing Service. This office may, at its sole discretion, take action on such complaints, including, but not limited to, making complaints available to other students, removing existing listings, and prohibiting future listings by the subject property owner or sublettor.
