Conference Information
The conference will celebrate the inspiring legacy of Judge Higginbotham
and proffer a vision for civil rights activism in the American
legal process today. Drawing together scholars, legal practitioners,
public officials, activists, and students, the conference aims
to facilitate thought and discussion about the role of race in
America's legal institutions in the twenty-first century.
In
the spirit of Judge Higginbotham's commitment to public policy,
the event will truly be a scholarly working conference, intended
to explore real reforms in our justice system's handling of racial
issues. The conference will feature a series of panel discussions
considering questions of race and values in some of the most critical
areas of American law: criminal justice, the academy, the judiciary,
democracy, and gender and sexuality.
Already
confirmed speakers include the Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton,
the Honorable Harry Edwards, the Honorable Nathaniel Jones, The
Honorable Barney Frank, Newark mayoral candidate Cory Booker,
Professor Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Professor Michael Higginbotham,
former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder, and many others.
In
addition, conference participants will gather in a series of smaller
discussion groups devoted to areas such as critical race theory,
economic development, reparations, racial profiling, education
reform, and juvenile justice. To preserve a record of the ideas
exchanged, we will publish conference papers in the Yale Law and
Policy Review.
We
are confident that the conference will represent a fitting tribute
to Judge Higginbotham. Thank you for registering. We look forward
to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Registration Committee
