Gabriel Winant
Broadly speaking, I'm interested in the history of American capitalism. More specifically, I plan to work on political economy and labor history, with an eye toward the continuity of power and the ability of capital to adapt and maintain itself and negotiate with grassroots democratic aspirations. The American South, with its distinct conservatism and unrestrained capitalism, has always held a particular intellectual attraction to me. While at Yale, I hope to find ways to yoke together political economy and cultural history to approach my interests, and to gain a comparative grounding in geographical and chronological areas outside my own.
