HR Generalists and How They Can Assist You
Who is my HR Generalist and how can my generalist assist me?
Your HR Generalist is a member of the Client Support unit in the Department of Human Resources at Yale University. The HR Generalists are aligned with all of the schools and departments at Yale to respond to the HR needs of the employees, supervisors and managers, union representatives, and business office administrators and staff. The HR Generalist is generally your next point of contact for human resource needs after you have consulted with your supervisor, business office, departmental HR Representative or administrator, unless a confidential issue needs to be discussed.
Your HR Generalist may be able to respond to your inquiry immediately or will consult and/or partner with HR specialists in the many other specialty areas of HR at Yale. In some instances, they may work closely with union representatives, department administrators or outside consultants to respond to your needs, depending on the issue or level of complexity.
As an employee, your needs may be range from general questions to confidential inquiries about the probationary period, employee counseling, information about Yale’s Employee Assistance Program, leave of absence questions, layoff rights and benefits, cashing out bonus vacation, training recommendations, requests to see your personnel file, or available work/life programs and services.
As a supervisor, your needs cover a variety of areas such as employee performance, coaching and training, special recognition awards, diversity issues, specialized training needs, department restructuring, future hiring needs, developing new job descriptions, policy and collective bargaining agreement interpretation, merit increases, or extra compensation.
As the department Administrator or departmental HR representative, you may seek information or help on a broader context, such as strategic planning, improving morale or departmental turnover, effective communications, change management, departmental training needs, merit increase administration, improving management/labor relations, succession planning, general retention issues, project management, implementing a performance management program, rolling out the results from Yale’s Workplace Survey, and diversity initiatives.
