Yale University and its researchers recognize that research is enhanced through collaborations with individuals external to the University. Yale researchers therefore, frequently engage community agencies, healthcare clinics and others from throughout the world in their research projects. Yale must enter into formal research collaborations or partnerships when professionals representing these external organizations or independent investigators become members of the Yale research team or are otherwise “engaged” in human research as defined by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS), Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
Review and approval by the external organization’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) is required prior to any agent, employee or other representative from these external entities taking part in the research. Yale will, under certain circumstances and with appropriate documentation, agree to serve as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of record for these external organizations.

This section describes the requirements for becoming a Yale Research Affiliater: the application and approval processes, and the required documentation. This section will assist potential Research Affiliates (administrators, researchers, and support staff) and Yale researchers who plan to conduct human research in which an external organization or individual will be “engaged.”
