FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Growing & Learning TogetherCommuniversity Day and International Cultural Festival join forces againMarch 1, 2007 -- On Saturday, April 21, Communiversity Day and the International Cultural Festival will be joining forces once again to celebrate the ties between and diversity of the Yale and New Haven communities. They are hosting a fabulous day of fun and educational activities, entertainment and refreshments – all free and open to the public – 11am to 3pm on Yale's Old Campus (bordered by Chapel, High, Elm and College streets; across from the New Haven Green). International Cultural Festival
Every year, Yale and New Haven welcome more than 3,000 international scholars, students and staff members and their families from over 100 countries. At the University alone, there are over 70 nationality/cultural clubs and organizations. At the festival, visitors will be given "passports" that they can get stamped as they "travel" among the informative and entertaining exhibitions about various world cultures that will be presented by student groups. As noted above, there will also be performances of dance and music from around the globe. One highlight of the festival will be an exhibition of photographs from Yale graduate and professional students. You will see these students' images and stories from their homelands and from their travels. The International Cultural Festival’s main sponsor and coordinator is the Office of International Students and Scholars. Each year, members from Yale’s international student and scholar population are invited to be part of the ICF Planning Committee. This year, the undergraduate International Students Organization (ISO) is playing a key role in coordinating participation from other international and intercultural student groups from around campus. Co-sponsors of the event include the Asian American Cultural Center, the Yale Graduate & Professional Student Senate (GPSS), the MacMillan Center for International & Area Studies, the McDougal Graduate Student Life Center, Yale's Office for Diversity and Equal Opportunity (ODEO), and Yale’s Office of the Secretary. Communiversity DayCommuniversity Day is the annual salute to the links between the campus and the city. Now in its thirty-first year, the day will include a range of activities for individuals of all ages. Youngsters can enjoy the games and rides at the Kids' Carnival, which will again feature a giant inflatable slide and Moon Bounce; or pick up a free book from the Book Bank, part of the Community Action Bazaar. Adults visiting the bazaar can participate in interactive exhibits by over 25 Yale groups and New Haven agencies involved in public service. Visitors young and old can stargaze in the middle of the
day in a planetarium inside Dwight Hall Chapel, which is sponsored by DEMOS, a
Yale undergraduate organization that presents science education programs in In keeping with Communiversity Day tradition, free hot dogs, veggie burgers, and hamburgers will be available throughout the day. Communiversity Day is coordinated by Alpha Phi Omega, the University's co-ed community service fraternity, and is sponsored by Yale's Office of New Haven and State Affairs, Council of the Masters, Dwight Hall, and the President's Office among others.
