1. Review eligibility requirements.

Review the Light Fellowship eligibility requirements to ensure all criteria have been met before applying.

2. Start an application through your MyCIPE Account.

The first step in the application process is to log into or create a MyCIE account by following the instructions here. You will seach for the Richard U. Light Fellowship for Language Study in East Asia, click on this program title and hit "Start Applying" (the "Start Applying" button will only be available when the competition is open and accepting applications). You will be asked to select a term for which you intend to apply, if you are unsure, pick your most likely term - it can be changed later. Once you start an application, you will see a page providing you with all the instructions on how to complete your application.

Starting an application does not obligate you to apply for a Light Fellowship. However, it enables Light Fellowship staff to contact you with important updates. Furthermore, you can track in real time the status of your application materials.

Step by step Powerpoint on Starting Your Light Application in MyCIPE

Deadlines to start a MyCIPE application:

Early Fall Competition (for study during spring 2011 only): September 23, 2011

Late Fall Competition (for study during summer 2011, fall 2011, and/or academic year 2011-2012): December 2, 2011, Friday 4:00pm

3. Attend a Light Fellowship information meeting.

Applicants are required to attend an information meeting in order to be eligible to apply. Applicants must also attend one of these meetings before they will be allowed to schedule an appointment for additional advising. During the meeting, we provide important and detailed information about application procedures. Information meetings are open to all students, and the content of each meeting is identical.

Applicants are only required to attend one such meeting before each deadline; however, each applicant must attend a meeting in each application cycle. Having attended an information meeting in previous years does not qualify for the current competition. Review the calendar for dates and times of information meetings.

NOTE: While the fellowship runs competitions in the Early Fall (for spring term only study) and the Late Fall (for summer, fall, and/or academic year study), students may attend any one of the information meetings just as long as they do so prior to their application deadline. All Information meetings are held during the fall semester, from September to December 1. There are no information meetings after December 1.

4. Meet with the Light Fellowship Staff.

If, after attending an information meeting, you still have questions regarding the Light Fellowship application or your choice of programs, you may schedule an appointment to meet with Light Fellowship staff. However, meeting with the staff is not an application requirement.

5. Complete all required application items.

Carefully review all the application instructions and advice found in your MyCIPE account. Be sure everything is completed. Be sure to provide the proper number of copies and follow the format requirements.

6. Credit for Light Fellowship Study.

Note: Applying for credit is external from the Light Fellowship application. You do NOT need to be studying for credit to be awarded a Light Fellowship.

You will see instructions in your MyCIPE account on what to do if you would like to apply to earn credit.
