November 12th - 13th @ Cornell University
InSight members travel to Cornell University to attend the Asian Pacific
American Women's Collegiate Conference. Shannon, Sallie, and Suraiya
facilitate Workshop Session IV of the conference on "Collegiate APA
Feminist Organizing."
The Asian Pacific American Women's Collegiate Conference, hosted on
Cornell's campus, was the first of its kind, inviting Asian American
females from colleges across the US to create awareness about the issues
they face under this unique identity. The organization that ran this
conference was Cornell University's Asian Pacific Americans for Action (APAA).
(1) InSight organized a trip to Cornell to
attend the conference.
Yale College Dean Saveena Dhall generously funded transportation
costs. Housing was also be free.
(2) InSight also facilitated a workshop forum for Session IV of the
conference.
"Collegiate APA Feminist Organizing"
Workshop Session IV - November 13th, 4.45-5.30pm
Event description: “Being an APA woman affects many facets of your
college experience! Through intense discussion and interaction, we will
sift through and reflect upon our experiences, difficulties, and/or
issues on campus as APA college women. With this, building alliances
that cross gender and ethnic lines will become a necessary question to
make us even more effective as we strengthen ourselves at the campus
level.”
Description:
The theme of this conference is, "Asian
American Women: Road to Self Discovery and Empowerment." We
seek to explore some of the issues that APA college women currently
face. Up until now, we do not feel that we have had the chance to
discuss these issues in depth. Such issues include APA feminism, APA
female student activism, voting, dual identity, body image, depression,
interracial relationships, family expectations, and APA females in the
workplace.
With the onset conference, we plan to bring together Asian American
female leaders in their respective fields, to share their personal
experiences with both Cornell students and other outside college
students. The speakers will focus their discussions on issues they deal
with under this unique, dual identity of a minority woman. We hope that
this conference will motivate and encourage all minority females,
especially Asian American females, to pursue fields where little to no
representation exists.
