How to Insert Graphics into a Web Page

Gif and Jpeg are the graphic formats for web use. Use gif for line drawings or graphs and jpeg for photos.

How to download a picture from the Web:

  • Place the cursor over the image and either right click on a PC or click and hold on a Mac and choose Save Image As.
  • Place the image file in the folder for the web site you wish to use it in. If you have several image files consider making a seperate folder called images within the websites folder.

How to place graphics on a page in Netscape Composer:

  • Place your cursor where you would like the image to be located and go to the Insert menu and choose Image. An image dialogue box will appear. Click on Choose File and locate the image file on your computer.

  • Choose your text alignment in the next section of the dialogue box. Text wrapping will not appear in Composer but when you preview in the browser you will see how it looks on the Web.

  • The next section allows you to adjust the dimensions of a graphic. Keep the constraint checkbox checked and then you can adjust either the height or width without losing proportion. Note: Graphic sizes should be no larger than 600x700 pixels to insure ease in loading.

  • There is an option for placing alternate text on a graphic. Alternate text makes the page accessible to those turn off image loading on the browser or those with disabilities using text reading software.

  • The image can also become a link. Double click on the image to call up the image dialogue box and then select the link tab at the top of the page. Enter in a URL or file name to link the image.

  • An image may be used as a background you are given that option in the image diaglogue box. Note: When an image is used as a background it tiles over and over again across the page. Please note that background images can make text harder to read.

Placement of graphics and text can best be achieved by using tables.
