About ISS |
ABOUT ISS International Security Studies at Yale University (ISS) is a center for teaching and research in grand strategy and international, diplomatic, and military affairs. ISS is directed by Paul M. Kennedy, the J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History. The Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy, the flagship program of ISS, is directed by John Lewis Gaddis, the Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History. ISS is supported by the Olin Foundation, Smith Richardson Foundation, the Jewett Foundation, and the Friends of ISS. The Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy is supported by an endowment created by gifts from Nicholas Brady '52 and Charles Johnson '54. ISS conducts programs, organizes conferences, and sponsors seminars and colloquia, most of which are open to the Yale-New Haven community. It publishes Occasional Papers and offers research grants and internship support for graduate and professional school and undergraduate Yale students as well as post-doctoral fellowships and pre-doctoral fellowships to scholars from other universities, and for serving members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Since assuming its current form in 1987, ISS has awarded over $4 million to Yale students and ISS fellows. Each summer, ISS sponsors the Ivy Scholars Program -- a rigorous academic experience that attracts outstanding high school student leaders from across the United States and around the world -- and the Ivy Scholars Teachers Program, a curriculum development program for secondary school instructors of speech and debate, history, government, and civics. ISS provides the opportunity for students to engage in active debate with established scholars, as well as extensive fellowship support to aid them in their research. Whether a luncheon seminar or a film series, all ISS activities promote the exchange of ideas between practitioners, senior scholars, and emerging scholars and leaders. Most ISS events are also open to the Yale-New Haven community and to interested guests. Faculty and fellows associated with ISS teach graduate and undergraduate courses, conduct research, and advise doctoral dissertations. Students who wish to affiliate themselves with ISS need only participate regularly in its events: there is no formal procedure for joining ISS. Please note that ISS does not admit students or award degrees: that is the responsibility of the Graduate School and Yale College.
