GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS
Graduate Fellowships Overview
Graduate students in the fields of international, diplomatic, political, and military history, and strategic studies who seek support for summer or year-long archival research or for summer language training should apply for a Smith Richardson Fellowship.
Graduate students pursuing research projects or uncompensated internships related to the historical study or contemporary practice of grand strategies, and who are currently enrolled in “Studies in Grand Strategy,” should apply for a fellowship from the John M. Olin Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, or the George Frederick Jewett Foundation.
Smith Richardson Foundation Fellowships
Purpose:
The Smith Richardson Foundation Fellowships provide support to graduate students for summer and year-long archival research in the fields of international, diplomatic, political, and military history, and strategic studies, and for summer language study.
Eligibility:
Graduate students undertaking initial archival research or enrolling in a summer language course, and advanced graduate students in the relevant fields undertaking an extended period of dissertation research, are eligible to apply for support. Award recipients may be requested, as a condition of support, to contribute to ISS’s Occasional paper series.
ISS will give priority to applicants who have demonstrated a scholarly and programmatic involvement in ISS's activities. Past Smith Richardson Fellowship recipients are eligible to apply for further support. The number and value of grants awarded will depend upon the size of the applicant pool. Grants will normally not exceed $5,000 for summer support and $10,000 for research during the academic year.
All applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to other Yale centers and departments, and externally, for support. Graduate students should begin by consulting the Student Grants website, Student Grants database, the McDougal Center, and their adviser.
ISS will not make awards to applicants who fail to apply for other Yale sources of funding for which they are eligible. It will give preference to applicants who apply for external sources of funding.
Deadline:
All materials must be submitted no later than 20 March 2009. Announcement of awards from the fund will normally be made within three weeks of this deadline.
Application Procedure:
Please download this application form and submit it as a cover sheet, with the materials requested on the form, to Monica Ward, ISS, 31 Hillhouse Avenue, Room #209, New Haven, CT 06511. You may also e-mail your materials to Ms. Kathleen Murphy.

Fellowships from the John M. Olin Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, or the George Frederick Jewett Foundation
Purpose:
These foundations provide support for research projects or internships related to the historical study or contemporary practice of grand strategies undertaken by students who have been, or are currently, enrolled in a course designated as part of ISS's Grand Strategy Project, especially “Studies in Grand Strategy.” Please note that you need apply only once to ISS for support from all three of these foundations: if your application is successful, you will receive funding from one or more of them.
Eligibility:
All students except second-semester seniors who are enrolled in or have completed a course designated as part of ISS's Grand Strategy Project are eligible to apply. Compensated internships are not eligible for support.
If you are currently enrolled in "Studies in Grand Strategy", are uncertain what you will be doing over the summer, but believe you may need support, estimate how much you will need and submit a conditional application, noting this fact in your statement.
If you have not taken a Grand Strategy Project course, you are not normally eligible for support. If you have a question about whether a course you have taken or are taking is part of the Project, please contact ISS Associate Director Dr. Ted R. Bromund.
