UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS
Undergraduate Fellowships Overview
Undergraduate students pursuing research projects or uncompensated internships related to the historical study or contemporary practice of grand strategies who are currently enrolled in, or who have been enrolled in, “Studies in Grand Strategy” or another Grand Strategy Project course, should apply for a fellowship from the John M. Olin Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, or the George Frederick Jewett Foundation.
Junior History majors seeking support for research on a senior essay in international studies should apply to the Travel Fellowship in Honor of Professor Robin W. Winks.
The Travel Fellowship in Honor of Professor Robin W. Winks
Purpose:
ISS administers a travel fund, established in 2002 in honor of Professor Robin W. Winks. The fund supports undergraduate History majors who are researching senior essays in the field of international studies.
Eligibility:
- Funding may be sought only by members of the Yale College Class of 2010 to work in primary source materials or to conduct interviews during Summer 2009 and the 2009-2010 academic year.
- The number and value of grants awarded will depend upon the size of the applicant pool. Awards will range from a minimum of $500 to a normal maximum of $2,500.
- All applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to other Yale centers and departments, and externally, for support. Students should begin by consulting the Student Grants database, the Office of International Education and Fellowship Programs, their DUS, their College Dean, and their senior essay adviser.
Deadline:
All materials must be submitted no later than 3 April 2009. Announcement of awards from the fund will normally be made within two weeks of this deadline.
Application Procedure:
Please download this application form and submit it as a cover sheet, with the materials requested on the form, to Kathleen Murphy, Senior Administrative Assistant, ISS, 31 Hillhouse Avenue #209, New Haven, CT 06511. You may also e-mail your materials to Ms. Kathleen Murphy. Please note that only one letter of recommendation, which may be from your senior essay adviser, is required of fund applicants.
Fellowships from the John M. Olin Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, or the George Frederick Jewett Foundation
Purpose:
These foundations provide support for research projects or internships related to the historical study or contemporary practice of grand strategies undertaken by students who have been, or are currently, enrolled in a course designated as part of ISS's Grand Strategy Project, especially “Studies in Grand Strategy.” Please note that you need apply only once to ISS for support from all three of these foundations: if your application is successful, you will receive funding from one or more of them.
Eligibility:
All students except second-semester seniors who are enrolled in or have completed a course designated as part of ISS's Grand Strategy Project are eligible to apply. Compensated internships are not eligible for support.
If you are currently enrolled in "Studies in Grand Strategy", are uncertain what you will be doing over the summer, but believe you may need support, estimate how much you will need and submit a conditional application, noting this fact in your statement.
If you have not taken a Grand Strategy Project course, you are not normally eligible for support. If you have a question about whether a course you have taken or are taking is part of the Project, please contact ISS Associate Director Dr. Ted R. Bromund.
ISS will give priority to applicants who have demonstrated a scholarly and programmatic involvement in ISS's activities. The number and value of grants awarded will depend upon the size of the applicant pool. Grants will normally not exceed $5,000.
All applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to other Yale centers and departments, and externally, for support. Undergraduate students should consult the Student Grants database, the Office of International Education and Fellowship Programs, their DUS, and their College Dean. ISS will not make awards to applicants who fail to apply for other Yale sources of funding for which they are eligible. It will give preference to applicants who apply for external sources of funding.
