Overview
The ITS publication process is supported and guided by the Communications Team working under the Assistant Vice President for Communications in Finance and Business Operations. Communications can provide general advice and support for your web publications needs, guidance on ITS publication policies and practices, and support for effectively communicating your services, new programs, and user support information to the Yale University community.
In cooperation with ITS’s leadership and major service divisions we have defined a common set of design principles for the ITS web presence:
Service-oriented presentation
The ITS website is service-oriented. Feature your major service offerings, avoid technical jargon whenever possible, and do not structure your site content around your administrative organization.
Universal usability
Yale ITS websites are used by a wide variety of Yale community members of differing technical knowledge and physical capabilities, and ITS online content may be accessed through an increasingly diverse set of display devices. All ITS pages should meet prevailing standards for universal usability, and use web standards design techniques to assure that ITS content may be displayed and used on as wide range of content display devices as possible (desktop computers, laptops, netbooks, palmtops, cell phones, iPods, etc.).
Consistent design and identity
Every ITS web page contributes to the Yale community’s perception of the quality, reliability, and timeliness of ITS programs and services. We have established minimum guidelines for the visual identity and core user interface elements of the site, to maximize our user’s ability to navigate our site effectively, and to assure design and interface harmony with the larger Yale University core web presence.
Accurate and timely information
The ITS site is only useful to readers if they can be sure that we are providing up-to-date and accurate information. ALL pages in the site should have a footer with the last updated date and the initials of the editor. Out-of-date content should be removed from the web in a timely way, and, if appropriate, archived.
Consistent technical and editorial quality
The ITS site is an official publication of Yale University, and should meet high standards for both editorial quality and web technical standards. This guide provides advice on “web standards” methods to assure the technical quality and reliability of our sites, as well as a comprehensive set of editorial guidelines to assure consistent content presentation throughout the ITS site.
Security for Yale information
The ITS website contains technical information that must remain secure and confidential, and available only to appropriate audiences within the University. Always consider the security and confidentiality of technical information you publish on your ITS site, and use appropriate methods (requires login) to shield sensitive Yale technical, academic, or administrative information from visibility to general web audiences.
