Managed Workstation available configurations

Hardware specifications

For detailed hardware specifications on computer recommendations, please download the PDF.

Please note: All Yale laptop and desktop computers used to store, access, transmit or receive ePHI must follow current secure configuration standards. Up-to-date secure workstation configuration standards are located at: http://hipaa.yale.edu/solutions/workstations.html

Standard

The standard configuration uses standard laptop and desktop hardware configurations, standard peripheral choices and a set of core software. It is based on a four-year lifecycle. In the standard configuration, the client will NOT have Administrative rights to the computer and will therefore be unable to install or remove software or change other system settings. An automated process will perform most changes. The University recommends most computer users be set up with a standard configuration.

The standard configuration is the most reliable, provides the greatest data security and protection from hostile exploitation and is the least expensive for the department and University to manage.

Flexible

The flexible configuration also uses standard hardware and software, but the client will have Administrative rights to the computer and will be able to install or remove software or change other system settings. The flexible configuration does not provide as much data security or protection from hostile exploitation as the standard configuration, but will follow standard university data security and safety measures, as required. Use of flexible hardware and software results in some cost savings but not as much as the savings resulting from the standard configuration. The flexible configuration is appropriate for some clients, for example, employees whose job it is to test hardware and software configurations.
