Updating Windows

Note: We strongly recommend that you configure Windows to automatically update, click here to learn how.
Windows Vista
- Click on the Start button.

- In Windows Search, type windows update as shown. Then click on Windows Update
- Click on Check for updates in the upper left of the screen.
- If your computer has updates needed, click the Install Updates button.
- After installation, Windows will show a confirmation message, letting you know the installation was successful.
- You may or may not be then required to restart your computer to complete installation of updates.
- Please set Windows to update itself automatically in the future to ensure your computer keeps itself updated and protected. Click here to learn how.
Windows XP
- Turn onSystem Restore by right clicking on My Computer, and selecting Properties.
- Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Click on Custom Install in the right window pane.
- If this is your first time running Windows Update, you may be prompted to install a plug-in. A window similar to the one below may appear. Click on Download and Install Now to continue.
- A list of updates appears. Click on the Review and install updates link and then click the Install Updates button.
- A new window will appear, indicating that Windows is updating itself.
- After the downloads have successfully downloaded and installed, a window may prompt you to reboot your computer. Reboot if prompted.
- Once your computer has restarted, repeat steps 2-5 until no more critical updates and service packs appear. Some updates cannot be installed at the same time as other updates, and some updates can only be installed after previous patches have been applied.
- Turn on System Restore.
- Please set Windows to update itself automatically in the future to ensure your computer keeps itself updated and protected. Click here to learn how.
Select the System Restore Tab.
Disable System Restore by checking the check box for "Turn off System Restore". Note: System Restore will be enabled after your computer is cleaned and patched. Warning: Disabling System Restore will delete all previous restore points.
Note: Some updates do not require a reboot of Windows.
