History

Konjo! West African Dance and Drum Troupe was founded in the fall of 1998 by Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu, Eyi Tuakli-Wosornu and Yemi Getahun. The trio wanted to promote the aesthetics of authentic African culture on the Yale campus through dance and music. The troupe made its debut at the Black Solidarity Conference Talent Show. Konjo! meaning “Beautiful” in Amharic, has been a popular fixture on campus since.

Drumming is the heart and soul of Konjo! Drums provide the beat to which we dance and creates communication between dancers and drummers. Konjo! is fortunate to have the mentorship of Kendrick Baker.

Konjo! is also fortunate to form a partnership with Aly Thatchol Camara who holds frequent master classes and workshops with our company.

Konjo! is a resident group of the Afro American Cultural Center.
