I'm having problems after compiling the 2.2.5 kernel on my RH5.2 box.
More specifically, I can't get my networking to work. I made the 3c509
driver a module of the kernel when i configured it before compilation, and
there's this line in my /etc/conf.modules :
alias eth0 3c509
should there be anything else neccessary in this file? I've also been
looking at the redhat networking scripts in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ which look like they set up the network
config, (specifically the file ifcfg-eth0) and right now it is set up to
use bootp . I suppose this is because this is what I used before on the
old kernel, and it worked fine. Before this all worked as long as my
hostname was set up correctly...but now it doesn't even though I'm sure
the hostname is correct. Any advice as to how I should set this thing up?
I've tried DHCP before, and have never gotten it to work, and I haven't
tried hard-coding it before.
Normally I would just try to use netcfg from x, but this brings up another
problem which i can't figure out, that being that I can't run x on account
of ever since I compiled the new kernel, when x starts up, all I get is
some message in a window flashed up on the screen real fast and then it
crashes back to windows...i think the message says something about the
session manager or not finding the session manager or something. Not even
sure about that one, and if I could get networking going at least I could
perhaps install something to fix it with...Any help you guys could give
would be greatly appreciated!
