It is supported as a module, and in my /etc/conf.modules i have:
alias eth0 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=10
I had to hand put in these values myself, and to make sure my io and irq
values were correct, i make a dos bootdisk with 3com's nic utility which
told me what the card's io and irq were, and they are correct.
But I get lots of neat messages when my machine boots:
for many network modules that I'm pretty sure aren't needed I get:
/lib/modules/2.2.5/net/<insertdrivermodulehere>.o: unresolved symbol(s)
I guess I can thank RedHat for suggesting i compile in all that crap :)
and then, more importantly, I get these errors:
insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.5/net/3c509.o: invalid parameter io:
and
eth0: unknown interface: operation not supported by device
both of these errors come up several times, I suppose when it loads the
module and again when it tries to start the networking with the network
scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
I can ping localhost, but that is about the only thing working. Pinging
broadcast (255.255.255.255) doesn't return anything either.
Any help with the networking issues would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, stupid question also, does anyone know where/if they log the
boot up messages such as these in linux?
And then of course, there one other problem which I guess I could fix if i
had networking going (just install new RPM's): Before, when I had my
machine to go straight to xdm login screen (run level 5 in inittab), when
I would log in, I would get a fast error message about the session manager
being messed up and then kicked back out to the login screen again. It
still does this. However, now that I have switched my run level back to
3, I can do a startx and I can get into X, however, all that is running is
my window manager (enlightenment) over x, for some reason Gnome is
nonexistent. But at least now, I can sorta run X apps (using the
enlightenment context menus) to see if I can solve the networking problem.
Does anyone know what this whole xdm/sessionmanage/GNOME thing could be or
how to fix it?
I am so fed up with Redhat right now, there stuff just keeps
breaking...and yes, I do know they are set to announce 6.0 on monday, and
it will have a new kernel, KDE, and GNOME. But it'll probably break
somehow....I so want to switch to Debian at the moment, in my opinion they
have better integrity and a better rep for stability.
thanks in advance guys,
dave
