cant get console keyboard to work among other things

Thanks to those who helped me with the filesytem creation issue (mkfs vs
mke2fs). I was able to eventually mount them. I also got vmware up and
running. The mistake I made was to shut my sytem down to make sure
everything would come up again properly mounted. All sorts of weird
things have happened...

First, when shutting down, it hung on shutdown gpm mouse services...
eventually I had to do a hard reset. Then I it found corrupt
filesystems on hdb... eventually I was able to use fdisk to wipe them
out (fsck refused to fix them). And then just when I thought I was out
of the woods, my console keyboard no longer responds and for a final
quirk my system boots up in initlevel 5 (which I never said for it to
do).

Fortunately, I found that I could log on to my system remotely (which is
what Im doing now using exceed for an xwin session) and so tried to fix
things. First, I went into inittab and saw that something (?vmware)
added a command to start xdm; fine I wiped it out, rebooted and here I
was back in x-win. I even tried at the lilo prompt linux 3 to force
character mode and it got overridden... the last thing I saw was xdm
starting. I havent tried single user mode yet since other people login
to this machine.

And so here I am with an nice graphical login on my console and I cant
even use it since my keyboard wont respond. Its embarrassing to have to
sit at another computer to access my own machine though I guess it could
be worse- I could have no machine at all to access.

So basically Im stumped. I think this all has something to do with my
installing vmware but I havent heard anything back from them yet. And I
still have to do killall gpm before doing a shutdown or my machine
hangs. Any ideas whats going on here?
