Re: Non-Linux - Ethernet for Solaris 7

Solaris 7/x86 should have come with a single floppy labeled "Solaris 7
Device Configuration Assistant." Boot from that floppy. You may need to
put the Solaris 7/x86 CDROM in your CD drive. After booting, it will run a
full-screen program which will let you detect/configure devices. It has
some online help, and is fairly easy to figure out. If it can't autodetect
your ethernet card, try using its "Specific Scan" feature to tell it
precisely what kind of NIC it is. If you make changes this way, I think
they are automatically saved, but I'm not sure. I know 'kdmconfig'
automatically updates the system, but the boot-disk conf program may be
different (kdmconfig is what you can use on x86 to change your
keyboard/mouse/graphics/monitor settings).

The boot disk should automatically find Solaris's partition on your disk, so
you can boot from the floppy to the installed system on your hard drive
using the new configuration. (In fact, this is how I always had to boot
Solaris when I had it installed on my Secondary-Master drive rather than
Primary-Master. stupid IDE.)

If Solaris 7/x86 didn't include a driver for your NIC, I'm not sure how you
get one. There is a Solaris x86 FAQ which is frequently posted to relevant
newsgroups. It may say. I would give the URL for the FAQ, but I seem to
have lost it. www.google.com will probably find it. You may also want to
check www.deja.com for similar questions.

As far as package installation, ".pkg" is a Solaris software package, sort
of like ".rpm" If you need to install one, use Admintool. It is a clicky
(Motif-based) administration program which you can find under the Sys Admin
folder in the Program Manager under CDE (or you can get to it using the
root-window pop-up menu if you are an OpenWindows user). If you don't have
X working, I assume there is a command-line equivalent, but I am not
familiar with it.

Good luck,
chad

Caveat: I haven't done a Solaris 7 installation for a few months, so
standard disclaimers apply regarding the potential for inaccuracies here.
